The new AP-420’s traditional design houses new stereo grand piano sounds and enhanced “Ivory Touch” keyboard. REVIEW

When the keys started breaking on our 10+ year old Casio Celviano AP22, we wanted to replace them because we loved the piano so much. Unfortunately, there were no replacement parts available. Not wanting to spend a ton of money on a new piano and knowing that Casio makes excellent pianos, we were looking at buying the $550 Casio Privia. However, when I saw the specifications for the AP420, I really wanted to get that one, so we waited for it to go on sale and snapped it up. We just got it today and here are the first impressions from my husband, who is very picky about his pianos. The feel is “marvelous” (his words) and the sound sample quality is excellent (it feels and sounds like a grand piano). However, the way the sound comes out of the piano seems wrong somehow. Perhaps it is just because we are used to our old piano–something just doesn’t seem right though. My first impression was that I didn’t like the sound, it seemed too muffled and I didn’t like how it sounds like the sound is coming out of speakers rather than the instrument–this seems to be especially with the speakers nearest the keyboard. One thing I noticed though is that the dynamic range is awesome–all of the notes sound so realistic when played softly, much more so than our old piano, and the high notes just sparkle. I feel the manual is informative, we soon discovered that it is very simple to brighten up and clarify the sound. We did have one little issue in assembling the piano, the bottom 6 screws didn’t line up with the holes, but we just used a drill to make new holes–problem solved. I really like that the piano bench is adjustable and made entirely of metal (except the seat upholstery and rubber feet covers of course). I am hoping it will be more durable that way. Another thing that is odd is that the manual says that you can adjust the reverb, but there are no labels on the piano to do that so we weren’t able to figure it out. Overall, we are very happy with the purchase and would do it again. Maybe we will buy some additional keys right now so we can keep this one for 20 years! :)
